The book is now published! It is the first part of an on-going research project that looks at the practice of tree worship which continues to be a part of the everyday culture of the people in the city of Bengaluru.
The main research project is titled: The development of the ashwath katte as a sustainable urban space: the role of social capital in minimising deterritorialisation.
It is funded through a one-year research grant from Azim Premji University (APU). The deliverable for this project is a detailed study of social capital at 20 ashwath kattes in the city.
However, as we started with the sampling, we thought that it might be useful to document, to record more kattes that could become another project in itself. This book is that project that started out as a call for volunteers and grew to become a 20-katte book only because there were so many young people who wanted to participate, who volunteered time over the weekends to visit a katte in their own neighbourhood and to add this to the collection we have here today. We have done a simple documentation of 50 ashwath kattes across the city. The remaining ones are listed at the end of the book with QR codes that give the location of each katte.
